What is a contact sheet?
A contact sheet is a single page that shows a whole shoot as small, numbered thumbnails. The name comes from the darkroom: photographers laid strips of negatives directly in contact with photo paper and exposed them, so every frame of the roll printed at actual size. Editors and clients used the sheet to choose which frames to enlarge, marking the picks with a grease pencil.
A digital contact sheet does the same job today: review a session at a glance, send a proof sheet to a client, or keep a printed record of what is on a memory card or a scanned roll. This contact sheet generator builds that page for you and adds as many pages as your shoot needs.
Who uses a photo contact sheet
- Wedding and portrait photographers sending proofs, so clients can reply with frame numbers.
- Photography students handing in a contact sheet with their final prints.
- Film shooters cataloging scanned rolls next to their negatives.
Tips for a readable sheet
- Twenty photos per Letter page (4 × 5) stay easy to judge once printed.
- Keep file names on when a client will answer with their picks.
- “Fill cell” gives a tight, even grid; “Whole photo” shows every frame uncropped.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a contact sheet?
- A single page showing many photos as small numbered thumbnails, so you can review a shoot and pick the best frames. It started as a darkroom print of negatives laid directly on photo paper.
- Is this contact sheet maker really free?
- Yes. The PDF download is free, with no watermark and no account. Everything runs in your browser, so there is no server cost to pass on.
- Are my photos uploaded?
- No. Photos are read and laid out on your device and nothing is sent to a server, which also makes it safe for client work under NDA.
- How many photos can I put on one page?
- Up to 10 columns by 12 rows. On a printed Letter or A4 page, 20 to 36 photos stay readable; the PDF adds as many pages as needed, up to 500 photos.
- Which file formats work?
- JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF and AVIF in every modern browser. HEIC opens in Safari only, and RAW files (CR2, NEF, ARW, DNG…) need to be exported as JPEG first.
- How do I make a contact sheet in Photoshop or Lightroom?
- Photoshop has File › Automate › Contact Sheet II, and Lightroom Classic has a contact sheet layout in its Print module. Both need the paid apps; this page does the same job in a browser.
